UrbanV and ENAC toward the future of mobility: Italy's first SAIL III flight becomes reality
Rome/Fiumicino, March 12, 2026 — ENAC and UrbanV announce Italy's first SAIL (Specific Assurance and Integrity Level) III operational authorization: a decisive step in moving drones from experimental activities to real-world applications serving cities, with a focus on connections in complex urban environments and on logistics services capable of concretely reducing transport times.
The SAIL III level is not just a technical parameter, but the safety standard needed to stably integrate drones into the urban fabric, enabling operations over populated areas and critical infrastructure, and the configuration of complex missions in controlled urban environments. In particular, the collaboration between ENAC and UrbanV has made a structured and coordinated path of experimentation possible, culminating in this authorization that positions Italy at the forefront of the Advanced Air Mobility sector.
This important milestone was achieved thanks to a series of flights carried out in the previous months, starting from the Pianabella Vertiport — the Sandbox managed by UrbanV at Rome Fiumicino Airport — which enabled the validation of operational procedures and the technological platform. The protagonist of the operations was the DLV-2 drone, operated by UrbanV and the result of a strategic partnership with manufacturer Speedbird.
